National Junior Championships get on their way

The National Junior Championships, for u18 and u21 men and women, get on their way this weekend in Brisbane. Teams from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and ACT will be competing in various divisions.

The ACT will be represented by the u18 boys and u18 girls teams.

Competition information, as well as news and results will be available during the competition.

Inaugural schools championships on its way

Planning for this Friday’s ACT schools competition is all but complete, as schools from across Canberra get ready to meet for the 2011 inaugural ACT Schools Championships.

The competition’s main aim is to help promote handball in Canberra schools and provide more competition to school-aged children. 

Ten teams, in the boys and girls under-16 divisions, will take part in the tournament. Read more »

AHF 2011 Annual General Meeting

The Australian Handball Federation (AHF) Annual General Meeting is planned for Saturday April 2 at 10:30am at Sports House, Figtree Road, Sydney Olympic Park.

Nominations are called for two Ordinary Director positions on the Board. Nominations must be submitted to the Secretary-General in writing and as per the Constitution procedure by Friday March 4.  Read more »

ACT Handball helps launch ‘Play for Life’

The ACT Handball Association was invited to help launch Play for Life, at Evatt Primary school yesterday.  The national campaign is the initiative of Australian Sports Commission (ASC) to encourage kids to join sporting clubs and get active.

The Ambassador for the ‘Play for Life...join a sporting club’ campaign, Johanna Griggs spoke to the students and teachers about the benefits of joining sports clubs. Also present were several high profile athletes and other dignitaries.  

The school hall was then turned into a mini-handball court where Australian Institute of Sport athletes helped run several mini-handball games for the school children. The ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr, joined in as well taking the opportunity to try his jump shot and comment about the athleticism of the game.

Over the last two years, the ACT Handball Association has worked closely with the ASC to provide handball to over 20 primary schools in the region.  ACT Handball has also helped run several Gala days involving hundreds of children. Read more »

Alice Keighley to represent Australia at the Youth Olympics

Local handball star Alice Keighley will be taking on the world’s best next month, when she travels to Singapore to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic Games.

Alice, who played for the ACT in u16 and u18 National Championships, over the past two years, is one of 14 players selected into Australia’s first Youth Olympics handball team.

Alice was selected following strong performances at the recent junior national championships in Sydney. This will be her first appearance in Australian colours. Read more »

Lans to represent Australia

Robert Lans in ACT colours at the 2009 National Championships

Canberra's Robert Lans was one of 14 players named to represent Australia at the upcoming Tri Nations tournament in Turkey, starting on 21 April.

The tournament, organised by the Turkish Handball Federation, will bring together the national men's teams of Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. It aims to promote the relationship between the three handball federations but more importantly, the games will serve to commemorate the 1915 battle in Gallipoli and honour the friendship forged between the nations since the historic battle. 

Lans has represented the ACT at the National Championships since 2006 but this is his first call-up to the Australian team. His selection comes at the back of a strong 2009 season for Canberra and ACT.

Australia to take on Turkey in Gallipoli

Three nations handball tournament in Turkey

The Australian men’s handball team is set to take on Turkey and New Zealand, next year in Gallipoli, in a three-nations tournament to commemorate ANZAC day.

Australian Handball Federation president, Mr Paul Smith, came to the agreement with his Turkish counterpart, Mr Tarik Cengiz, at the recent International Handball Federation Congress in Egypt.

Three matches will be played, culminating in the final game between Australia and Turkey on Anzac Day.

This will be Australia’s first ever game against Turkey at the senior men’s level. Read more »

Ramadani confirmed as national team coach

The AHF has confirmed the appointment of Canberra’s Taip Ramadani as coach of the national men’s team.

He will be tasked with preparing the squad for the 2011 Handball World Championships in Sweden.
