Canberra snuffs out the Blaze in a thriller to take third

In the most exciting game of the season, Canberra came from a 5 goal half time deficit to defeat Hills Blaze 48-47 (in extra time) and take third in the NSW Handball Premier League yesterday.  The match also marked the final game for Canberra for competition lead scorer, Tomasz Lazek.

After a disappointing loss to Hills Heat in the Semi Finals last week Canberra entered the game determined to finish the season on a strong note.  Unfortunately, Canberra’s determination went missing in the first half with missed shots, costly turnovers and weak defence allowing hills to gradually push out their lead through the first half.  Despite some poor play, Canberra still managed to stay within reach of the Blaze for most of the first half, but a late surge by the Blaze extended their lead to five.  Canberra entered half time trailing 17-22. Canberra extinguish Blaze

Canberra won its final match of the regular season, defeating Hills Blaze, 45-38 in Canberra yesterday.  Canberra welcomed back young left back Matt Cechet, following a break of two months to recover from an elbow injury. Table and Results...

Canberra and Hills exchanged goals early, with Hills taking advantage of sloppy defence from the home team.  However, Canberra began to regain focus, closing their gaps and captialising on turnovers to push to a half time lead of 23-16.  Read more »

Canberra to meet Hills Heat in the semi finals

With one round in the 2011 NSW Handball League yet to be played, Canberra's semi-final opponents have been locked in.  Regardless of the outcome of next week's home game against Blaze, Canberra will end up third on the League ladder and will face Hills Heat (2nd) in a repeat of last year's final.  Sydney University are now confirmed premiers but their semi-final opponents are not yet known; Blaze and Harbourside will be fighting for the 4th spot on the ladder in their remaining matches. Table and Results... Canberra sinks Harbourside

Canberra avenged their loss to Harbourside, three weeks ago,  with a 38-33 win, in Sydney, yesterday. The win securing Canberra’s position into the finals, with only two games left to play. Harbourside must now win all three of their remaining games to have a chance to make the final four.

Canberra started the game determined to get back into winning form, scoring first.  Despite Harbourside pressing a 5+1 defence in order to take out Canberra’s leading scorer, Tomasz Lasek, Canberra were able to score freely, gradually breaking away from Habourside though the first half to go to the break with a 17-11 lead. Hills inflict another defeat on Canberra

Canberra fell just short of Hills Heat, going down 35-33 at Homebush on Saturday.  Canberra, still missing several players through injury was bolstered by Brazilian newcomer Luciano Baca making his debut. 

Hills went into the match full of confidence after defeating competition front runners, Sydney Uni last week by 10 goals.  However, Canberra made it tough going for them early on, going goal for goal for the majority of the first half.  Canberra went for a 5 + 1 defence, with Jordan Chapman taking Hills danger man Kenneth Toerlen out of the game for the majority of the first half.   Towards the end of the half, Hills managed to break away to a three goal lead, but Canberra responded to score the last four goals of the half to go to the break with a 19-18 lead.
