Harbourside and Sydney Uni through to the League final

Sydney Uni ended Canberra’s hopes of a third successive League final, with a 35:24 drubbing, at Olympic Park yesterday. Canberra put in a strong performance in the second half, to outscore Uni 17:16, but was never in with a chance, after a disastrous first half that saw them chasing 7:19 at the break.

Canberra overcomes UTS in a physical match-up

The Canberra club has survived a sudden-death play-off away to University of Technology Sydney (UTS) with a convincing victory yesterday, 25:19 (12:11 at the break). Canberra will now face arch rivals Sydney University for a spot in this year’s League final.

Having already lost to UTS at home in round 5 (33:25), Canberra was in trouble early in the game. Missing three key backs, who were out with illness, Canberra had to make last minute changes to their defence in an attempt to shut-down the League’s top scorer Fabian Synneby. The Swedish national caused all sorts of trouble in the first half, scoring five goals and leading with assists to keep the pressure on Canberra.

Preliminary rounds end in loss for Canberra

Canberra finished the preliminary rounds of the NSW League with a 45:29 loss to Harboruside, in Sydney yesterday. The loss cementing Canberra’s positioning at the bottom of the division one ladder.

Canberra’s hopes now hinge on a victory over division 2 front-runners, UTS, in Sydney next weekend for a spot in the play-offs.

Canberra will line up against second division team UTS, for a wild-card into the 2009 League finals, following another loss to Sydney University, at home yesterday, 33:26 (17:15 at the break).

Despite a strong start, leading 7:3 at the 10 minute mark, Canberra found it difficult to build momentum, allowing Uni back in the match soon after-wards. The visitors taking a two-goal lead into the break.

Trivia night a spectacular success

The Canberra Handball Club's first ever Trivia Night was a spectacular success, with all in attendance having a thoroughly enjoyable time. MC for the night was the charismatic Rob Lans who not only ensured that the night went as smoothly as possible but kept the participants engaged and entertained, not least through his skills as a joke teller.
