Canberra will line up against second division team UTS, for a wild-card into the 2009 League finals, following another loss to Sydney University, at home yesterday, 33:26 (17:15 at the break).
Despite a strong start, leading 7:3 at the 10 minute mark, Canberra found it difficult to build momentum, allowing Uni back in the match soon after-wards. The visitors taking a two-goal lead into the break.
Uni built on their lead in the second half and was headed for a comfortable victory when their captain, Christoph Niebel, was disqualified for striking with the elbow. After a five minute disruption to the game, following the red-card, Canberra hit back with goals from wings Andrew Lawrence and Dragan Radicoski to come within one goal of the lead 24:25.
With only ten minutes left in play, Canberra then conceded a double 2-minute suspension ending any hope of a come-back. Uni outscoring Canberra 8:2 in the last ten minutes of the game.
Sydney University’s Oliver Junker was the stand-out player of the match with nine goals. The giant left back who comes from Germany has been the find of the season, leading on the top scorers table with an impressive array of long-range shots.
Canberra will play Harbourside on Saturday, but the match will have no bearing on the final out-come of the competition. Harbourside will play Blaze in two weeks, for a chance at a semi-final clash with Hills Heat. Hills Heat and Sydney Uni will proceed directly into the semi-finals as first and second place-getters.
