Four in a row for NSW men, but Victoria spoil their party

NSW celebrate after a record fourth consecutive National Championship

NSW men are now undefeated in four years at the National Championships, after comfortably taking out this year’s main prize in Perth.

The blues had an easy path into the final with wins over Victoria, South Australia and then Queensland in the semi-final. In the final though, Victoria surprised the agile team coached by former National team wing Russell Garnett, who was also known for his lightning speed.

The ACT men’s team took out the third spot at this year’s National Championships in Perth, after going down to Victoria 20:25 in their semi-final clash at the Joondalup Arena on Saturday. Their third placement was decided on count-back, against Queensland, based on the first round win for ACT.

The ACT Women ended their Nationals campaign on a high note after a convincing 18:12 win over South Australia in their last clash of the tournament, on Sunday in Perth. The win securing 5th spot for ACT.

The team advanced in the quarter-final against Western Australia, after finishing second in their group, but came unstuck in the second half despite having a healthy lead at the break. The ACT had been leading 10:4 at the break but WA rallied back into the game to win 20:16 and secure a spot in the semi-final.

ACT goalkeeper Curtis Eitzen has inspired the ACT Men to their second win of the Championships, placing the team into the National Championships semi-final after upsetting the home team, Western Australia, 19:16 at Joodalup arena today (7:8at the break).

The 20 year-old heldback repeated attempts at goal by WA, keeping a clean-sheet for a period of 15 minutes in the second-half.

Western Australia, fielding former ACT star Maciej Krawczyk, took a two-goal lead early on in the game but ACT fought hard to stay in close contention. 

NSW women to strong for ACT

The ACT women lost 23-9 to NSW in their first match of this year’s Australian National Handball Championships. 

The ACT women put in a spirited performance against last year’s champions, maintaining a strong defence throughout the match but found it difficult to break the physical NSW defence. 

Stephany Thuleau top scored for ACT with 3 goals and Renilde van Roost and Agnieska Bylinska scored 2 each. 

ACT comes up against South Australia in their next match later this afternoon.
 

ACT men open with a win against Queenlsand

ACT had a successful start to the National Championships, beating Queensland 22-21 (11-10 at half time).  It was only the second time in the history of the National Championships that the ACT has beaten Queensland.  The ACT started with an excellent rhythm in attack, with early goals to Hunter, Ivankovic and Orsatti but was punished in defence, receiving a succession of 2 minute suspensions. Nonetheless, thanks largely to some superb goal-keeping by Curtis Eitzen, they went into the break with a slender one goal lead.

ACT has announced its senior women’s and men’s teams for this year’s National Championships being held in Perth, starting on 16 October at the Joondalup Arena.

The ACT women’s team have drawn NSW and South Australia in their preliminary rounds, whilst the men will open against Queensland and Western Australia.
