In the second half, Hills fought back to narrow the margin and with twelve minutes left in the game they had their best chance to go in-front. As Canberra struggled to hold on to a fragile lead, star back Maciej Krawczyk was red-carded following his third two-minute suspension. Canberra spent a total of twenty minutes with one player less through suspensions, as players took turns on the bench.
Whilst Canberra was struggling to keep players on the court through mistimed fouls, Hills had more serious troubles. Key backs, Pieter Gloudemans and Riccardo were both forced out of the game with injuries. Riccardo watched the rest of the game from the bench but Gloudemans was less fortunate. The right back was taken away by medics with a suspected tear in the achilles.
With ten minutes left in play, a converted penalty by Richard Ridley put Hills within one goal but Canberra followed up with four goals of their own, securing the win and a second consecutive grand-final appearance.
