National champions - NSW u16 girls

The NSW u16 girls team completed the championship double for their state with a convincing 13:6 win over Queensland, in Canberra today. NSW drew with Queensland in their round one game but started this game on a better note, taking a 5-1 lead in the first ten minutes.

From then on, NSW was in full control, giving Queensland little chance to get back into the game.

The competition’s top scorer Laura Ridley of NSW took the lead in scoring again with six goals, bringing her tally to 26 in three games. Read more »

NSW boys defeated ACT 30:12, to win their third consecutive u16 National Championships in Canberra today.

ACT was first to score but NSW raced-off to 7-1 lead in the next ten minutes, putting the game beyond ACT's reach, before the half-time buzzer.

Lachlan Skulander was in good shooting form again, scoring ten to take his tally to 28 in just three games. Read more »

Queensland girls get a win

The Queensland girls defeated the ACT team 16:3, to end the round robin part of the competition. The teams will play again tomorrow for a chance at the final, against last year’s champions NSW.

The less experienced ACT team put in a good performance but again found it difficult to score goals.

This was Queensland’s first win of the Championship after drawing with NSW yesterday. Read more »

The ACT u16 boys team registered their first win of the championship, with a 22:19 victory over Queensland today.

The teams exchanged goals for most of the game but decisive goals by Nikola Taneski and Matt Cechet, late in the second half, put the game beyond doubt.

For Queensland Stephen McArthy top scored for his team with 8 goals but ACT’s Matt Cechet had another strong game in attack with 12 goals, despite being heavily marked.  Read more »

Last year’s champions, NSW defeated the less experienced ACT side 26:6 (10:1 at the break), today in Canberra.

ACT took a long time to get on the board, and before Sarah Carter scored her team’s first goal, ACT was 7:0 down.

From then on, NSW continued their domination of the game and at one stage had a nine-goal scoring spree. ACT had several more chances to get on the score-board but NSW keeper, Kate Nolan, held them away with a string of saves. Read more »

The NSW boys’ team secured their spot in the Championship final, with a convincing 30:11 win, against Queensland in Canberra today.  NSW, who had no trouble overcoming ACT last night, raced-off to a 4:0 lead very early in the first half and from then on controlled the pace of the game.

Left-back Jason Lai was the team’s their highest scorer with 7 goals but centre-back Dylan Bindczus was the key player in attack, initiating set-moves and looking for scoring opportunities. Read more »

Defending champions, NSW dominated their game against ACT, winning 38:19, in the boys’ category in Canberra today. ACT stayed in contention for about 20 minutes of the game, thanks to some amazing long-range shooting by their 2.03 metre back, Matt Cechet.  Read more »

The NSW u16 girls scored two goals, late in the game, to take a point from Queensland, during their 13 – 13 draw at the Australian Institute of Sport, in Canberra, today.  

Queensland was down 7 goals to 6 at the break but a 5 – 1 scoring run, at the start of the second half, gave them a three goal lead. Read more »

National u16 Championships start today in Canberra

The Australian u16 Championships begin today at the Australian Institute of Sport, in Canberra.  Defending champions in the girls category, NSW will meet QLD  in the opening match at 18:30.

Canberra to host u16s National Championships

Australian Institute of Sport

Canberra is set to host the 2010 Australian National Championships, for youth in the under 16 years of age category. 

The competition will be held at Australia's premier sporting facility, the Australian Institute of Sport between 9 and 11 of July.
